Participates in developing and implementing patient care activities. Leads therapeutic activities and encourages patient participation. The Milieu Therapist works under the direction of a licensed professional, providing for the needs of patients, families and the unit. THIS IS A PART TIME POSITION.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides care for selected patients on a consistent basis.
- Interacts therapeutically with patients during all activities.
- Participates in admission process, and orients patients and families to the program:
gives unit tours explains phases and levels of care reviews patient rights conducts patient searches aids in separation process explains family role in milieu
- Implements plan of care and contributes to revisions of objectives and interventions.
- Develops behavior programs in collaboration with the treatment team.
- Provides a safe environment for patients, self and others.
- Encourages patients to participate in the behavioral program and therapeutic activities.
- Assists with learning activities and behavior management in the classroom.
- Reinforces information and provides emotional support to the family from admission to discharge.
- Reports patient response to treatments and medications.
- Take vital signs, heights, weights, and collect specimens.
- Escorts patients to consults or procedures.
- Intervenes in crisis situations, using the least restrictive alternative.
- Observes family therapy.
- Participates in the family education process from admission through discharge:
Daily parent teaching classes Individual family teaching in the milieu (shadowing) Modeling of appropriate behavioral modification techniques Therapeutic use of visiting hours.
- Assists with psychological testing
- Performs clerical functions including:
entering data in clinical system maintaining patient roster entering patient programs into the computer
- Observes for and reports changes in physical or emotional responses.
- Documents legibly and accurately.
- Contributes to the interdisciplinary treatment planning process by communicating observations, suggesting interventions, and participating in patient care related meetings.
- Participates in reporting conference with parents, referral sources and treatment team.
- Actively listens to others in order to learn and gain new skills.
- Uses resources available and seeks feedback from other disciplines.
- Maintains confidentiality.
- Participates in continuing education opportunities at Children’s.
- Reads professional journals and books.
- Participates in evaluation of self and peers.
- Accepts instruction and guidance from preceptor and other clinically advanced personnel.
- Assists with recreational, leisure and skills activities.
- Bachelor’s degree in health related field.
Licenses & certifications
- Current CPR certification is required.
Specific knowledge, skills and abilities
- Physical and emotional health adequate for attendance requirements and performance which may include, but is not limited to: recognizing unsafe patient conditions, lifting/transferring patients and equipment plus obtaining supplies as needed.
- Ability to hear and communicate with others in a clear, understandable, and professional manner.
- Appearance will meet Children’s dress code standards.
- May be required to work under stressful conditions and be flexible and adaptable to change.
- Computer skills and knowledge in Microsoft Word.
- This job requires the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to patients ranging in age from 0 to 18 years. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span, must possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and must be able to provide the care needed as described in the unit’s policies and procedures.
- Requires flexibility with schedule so as to eliminate the need for overtime to complete tasks and to cover unit needs.
- Requires ability to effectively work with patient behaviors which may be aggressive, self-abusive, violent, bizarre, maladaptive and/or verbal abuse.
- Requires the ability to move and/or restrain patients, lift disabled patients, and work in outdoor weather conditions.
