Summary

The incumbent in this position participates in developing and implementing patient care activities. Leads therapeutic activities and encourages patient participation. The Milieu Therapist works under the direction of a licensed professional, providing for the needs of the patients, their families and the unit.

Responsibilities

  • Provide care for selected patients on a consistent basis; interact therapeutically with patients during all activities; participates in admission process, orient patients and families to the unit; develop behavior programs in collaboration with the treatment team; provide a safe enviroment for patients, self and others; encourage patients to participate in the behavioral program and therapeutic activities; assist with learning activities and behavior management in the classroom; reinforce information and provides emotional support to the family from admission to discharge; reports patient response to treatments and medications; take vital signs, heights, weights, and collect specimens; escort patients to consults or procedures; intervene in crisis situations, using the least restrictive alternative; observe family therapy; participate in the family education process from admission through discharge; assist with parent teaching classes; assist with psychological testing; and perform clerical functions.
  • Observe for and report changes in physical or emotional responses; document legibly and accurately; contribute to the interdisciplinary treatment planning process by communicating observations, suggesting interventions and participating in patient care related meetings; participate in reporting conference with parents, referral sources and treatment team; actively listen to others in order to learn and gain new skills; and use resources available and seek feedback from other disciplines.
  • Maintain confidentiality; participate in continuing education opportunities at Children's and read professional journals and books
  • Participate in evaluation of self and peers; accept instruction and guidance from preceptor and other clinically advanced personnel; assist with recreational, leisure and skills activities; and perform other duties and special projects as required.

Education, Certification, Experience

  • Four-year bachelor's degree- REQUIRED
  • Experience in child and adolescent therapy - preferred
  • BLS for healthcare provider - REQUIRED
