Position Summary - Certified Tumor Registrar Required

This position will join the CCBD research team, assuming responsibility for recording and tracking patient information in CCBD databases for oncology patients treated in this program. Prior experience as a cancer registrar will assist this person in understanding the details to be tracked in various databases for ongoing research and publication. Significant time will be spent in various tumor boards and patient care conferences, as well as interacting with providers to obtain key information to be entered in databases. This person will serve as the back-up to the Cancer Registrar, as well. This is a full-time position M-F, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

This job is responsible for identifying cancer cases in the institution, for recording and tracking cancer patients for life according to guidelines established by the Texas Cancer Registry and American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (COC), and for conducting statistical analyses related to the collected data.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Identify all eligible cancer cases; access and abstract into computerized registry according to specific guidelines.
  • Collect follow-up information on all registry patients and enter information into the computer according to specific guidelines.
  • Complete data retrieval and statistical analyses of registry data on a priority basis.
  • Function as system manager of the computerized cancer registry to ensure completeness, accuracy, and timeliness in reporting on the hospital's cancer data by performing quality assurance reviews and having registry physician perform quality assurance reviews.
  • Function as a member of the Cancer Committee by reporting registry data, and assembling statistics for patient care evaluations; coordinate, monitor and document components of an approved cancer program according to established guidelines.
  • Function as part of an Annual Report Committee and publish an annual report of the cancer program in compliance with the requirements of the COC.
  • Perform other oncology program duties that are non-registry specific such as receiving new patient information, investigating diagnoses, and distributing information to the appropriate team; processing active patient charts to the ACE program according to established guidelines; and monitoring tumor board conference procedures to ensure that guidelines are met by participating physicians.



  • Associate’s Degree required; Bachelor’s degree preferred. 2 years previous Tumor Registry experience abstracting and coding in an American College of Surgeons accredited cancer program and certification as a tumor registrar required. The ideal candidate demonstrates excellent communication skills and a strong background in medical terminology.

Licenses & certifications

  • Designation as a Certified Tumor Registrar is required.


  • Two years of previous Tumor Registry experience abstracting and coding in an American College of Surgeons accredited cancer program is required.

Specific knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • Advanced level skills in working in an automated cancer registry environment.
  • Understanding of data analysis techniques such as survival analyses, standard error, standard deviations and others.
  • The ability to interpret medical data, to evaluate a patient's response to treatment, and to identify complications due to treatment.
  • Knowledge and ability to operate computers and software applications.
  • The ability to hear and communicate with others in a clear, understandable, and professional manner, on the phone and in person.
  • The ability to interact effectively with peers, technical and nursing staff, physicians, patients/families and other customers in a manner that represents Children's positively.
  • The ability to recognize what needs to be done and to initiate activities without direction.
  • Effective organizational skills and attention to detail; effective follow-through and commitment to excellence.
